We always go to Angel for breakfasts because we are around Fraser Street every Sunday~  But this time we decided to visit specifically during it’s tea time to order their mini meals.  Panda has always preferred to eat early dinners.  So we often have mini meals instead of dinner.  That way, we can have the rest of the night to do something else.   For those who aren’t familiar with mini meals at HK style cafes.  They are smaller versions of dinner and is often cheaper as well.  The super duper thing about these meals is that they still come with a choice of drinks.  Panda loves cold milk tea!!!

I didn’t feel like eating noodles or rice so I opted to have their brick toast with creamy chicken and mushroom.  As you can tell from the picture, it is a large brick size loaf of white bread that was toasted and then emptied.

The inside was then filled with creamy white sauce, chicken pieces and mushroom.  It’s delicious.  They toast the bread with a bit of butter too so that it seems and would taste richer.  They added red peppers as well to add a crunch to the dish.  I personally don’t understand why most HK style cafe dishes are loaded with onions and red or green peppers.  I don’t mind them very much but there is often so much that it becomes excessive.

The next dish we ordered was the pork ribs with black bean sauce on rice.  This was very good because the pork ribs were very juicy.  The sauce wasn’t overwhelming and complemented the white rice a lot.

The only problem with this dish was the large amount of onions and peppers.  As well, the onions were very raw and not that easy to eat. Most people cannot eat raw onions because of the strong taste.  So we left lots of it on the plate still at the end of the meal.  Overall, Angel Cafe serves pretty solid tea time mini meals.  Their milk teas are always good and their dishes are often a success.

Overall impression: Golden Oscar has random hits and misses.  It’s difficult to predict whether a dish will be good or bad.

Good:

• good tasting dishes
• mini meals are like regular sized plates
• combos come with a drink
• no charge to order cold drinks

Bad:

• loads of peppers and onions in many dishes

Golden Oscar Cafe is decorated with movie posters for the Hollywood theme.  They are famous for having pretty large dishes.  Their food ranges from $8 to $10+.  I think that this HK style cafe has higher prices than most places.  But it makes sense because they give you larger plates of food.  We were pretty hungry and decided to order two combos.  We had the curry beef with rice and the seafood pasta.  Both combos came with a creamy corn soup and a drink.  The most common HK style drinks are: milk tea, coffee, lemon tea and honey lemon tea/water.  Golden Oscar Cafe charges you an extra $1 for cold drinks.  As well, they serve the syrup for the cold drink separately so you have to add it in yourself

The seafood pasta was a big flop.  The noodles were over cooked and way too soft.  As for the sauce, it was too thick and slimy!  However, there were big pieces of fish, squid, imitation crab and onion.

The whole dish was overwhelmed by the sauce. For some reason, the sauce was actually sweet. (???) I found this very odd!  We definitely did not finish this.

As for the curry beef rice, it was more normal.  The beef was tender and moist.  The only complaint is that there were too much green and red peppers and onions.  Not everyone likes the onions and peppers because they are cooked very raw.  Some people like the crunchiness but there was just too much of it.

Overall impression: Golden Oscar has random hits and misses.  It’s difficult to predict whether a dish will be good or bad.

The Winter Olympics will be arrive in Vancouver very very soon!  iPanda has noticed a lot of changes in the city.  Downtown is now decked out in colorful decorations and signs.

As well, everywhere you go you can see Miga, Quatchi, Sumi and Muk Muk~  These mascot friends followed me home and are now all living in my panda pad until the olympics start~  But suddenly, they were attacked by a giant brown dog yesterday!!!!

I was on scene with my camera and got a picture by picture story of what happened.  When the giant dog attacked, Muk Muk fainted from the smell of the deadly slobber, but Sumi was right there taking care of him. (more…)
