We’ve been visiting Twinkle 2 pretty frequently lately because iPanda has fallen in love with their stars!  Take a look at my previous post HERE to understand what I mean.  I wanted to share with all you foodie lovers out there that they have a special deal now where you can get a complementary drink (house milk tea or honey green tea) with all set meals served from 12 to 8pm.  I think this is a great deal because a drink here can easily be 4 or 5 dollars (depending on what you order and if you add anything to your drink).

My favourite meal here is the fish roe and unagi fried rice.  It’s delicious!  I’ve been trying to make a similar version of it at home.  I add salmon bits to it too.  This dish is not exactly a fried rice because the rice is too moist.  Traditional fried rice should be made with left over rice and should be very dry.  However, I personally like it if fried rice is a bit moist.  In terms of size, this isn’t a very big plate but should be enough for 1 person.

I shared the rice with Rockia so we also ordered a snack.  YUM!  I love their crispy fried chicken nuggets.  They were heavily breaded and fried so that the outside was very crispy.  This dish wasn’t very oily because it didn’t leave the taste of oil in your mouth.  However, it’s this is definitely not a very healthy snack.

We always go to Angel for breakfasts because we are around Fraser Street every Sunday~  But this time we decided to visit specifically during it’s tea time to order their mini meals.  Panda has always preferred to eat early dinners.  So we often have mini meals instead of dinner.  That way, we can have the rest of the night to do something else.   For those who aren’t familiar with mini meals at HK style cafes.  They are smaller versions of dinner and is often cheaper as well.  The super duper thing about these meals is that they still come with a choice of drinks.  Panda loves cold milk tea!!!

I didn’t feel like eating noodles or rice so I opted to have their brick toast with creamy chicken and mushroom.  As you can tell from the picture, it is a large brick size loaf of white bread that was toasted and then emptied.

The inside was then filled with creamy white sauce, chicken pieces and mushroom.  It’s delicious.  They toast the bread with a bit of butter too so that it seems and would taste richer.  They added red peppers as well to add a crunch to the dish.  I personally don’t understand why most HK style cafe dishes are loaded with onions and red or green peppers.  I don’t mind them very much but there is often so much that it becomes excessive.

The next dish we ordered was the pork ribs with black bean sauce on rice.  This was very good because the pork ribs were very juicy.  The sauce wasn’t overwhelming and complemented the white rice a lot.

The only problem with this dish was the large amount of onions and peppers.  As well, the onions were very raw and not that easy to eat. Most people cannot eat raw onions because of the strong taste.  So we left lots of it on the plate still at the end of the meal.  Overall, Angel Cafe serves pretty solid tea time mini meals.  Their milk teas are always good and their dishes are often a success.

Overall impression: Golden Oscar has random hits and misses.  It’s difficult to predict whether a dish will be good or bad.

Good:
  • good tasting dishes
  • mini meals are like regular sized plates
  • combos come with a drink
  • no charge to order cold drinks
Bad:
  • loads of peppers and onions in many dishes

Liu’s Taiwanese Restaurant is a small family run restaurant located in Union Square Shopping Centre.  This place is located right next to Richmond Sushi.  You can expect to find a variety of rice and noodle combos here.  We were here on a weekday for an early lunch and the restaurant was quite busy.  We started off the meal with the marinated egg.  This is only 75 cents and is Rockia’s favourite start to a Taiwanese meal.

We were very hungry so we ordered the satay beef noodle, a fried chicken drumstick with rice, and an oyster cake.  They were all very delicious, but a bit oily.  The first to arrive was the satay beef noodle.  This was the oiliest because of the satay sauce.  If you’ve ever bought a whole can of satay sauce from the super markets, you will see that it is actually mostly a can of oil with satay soaked in it.  We expected the oiliness and didn’t mind it very much.  There were a couple pieces of vegetables in the dish and upon the first bite I noticed that they were very crunchy!  This dish was pretty good overall because the thick savoury satay sauce was really the heart and soul of this dish.

Our next main dish is the fried chicken drumstick.  This was thickly coated in batter which made it very crispy. I didn’t mind the thick batter because the crunchiness worked well with the sauce and the chicken didn’t taste too oily because of this.

The dish came with a lots of mixed vegetables and rice.  The rice had Taiwanese meat sauce on it which made it even better.  I was amazed by the size of this dish because it was actually not that pricey!

I was curious about the oyster cake and ordered that as well.  This was different from what we usually have because the oyster cake isn’t made with only egg and oyster.  Instead, they used a clear floury dough as the base of the oyster cake.  As well, there were pieces of cooked vegetables on the bottom.

The oyster cake was topped with the same sauce that was on the fried chicken.  We didn’t really enjoy this because it was actually slimy!  The dough, sauce and oyster was all overly moist.  The dough was not cake-like but more like a chewy dough.  We weren’t used to the texture of this dish so it wasn’t a big hit with us.

The bill for the lunch came out to be $20.75.  We thought this was reasonable because we ordered a lot of food for only two people.  Liu’s does offer some main dishes like tofu and eggplant, but this place is known best for their rice and noodle combos.

Overall impression:

Good:
  • cheaper prices
  • big plates
Bad:
  • dishes can be a bit too oily
