Yang’s Fried Dumpling (小楊生煎)

Posted by iPanda in $Cheap Eats | 5 Paws | Shanghai | Shanghai Cuisine

We decided to visit Yang’s Fried-Dumpling because some of the locals in Shanghai told us that they had the best pan fried pork dumplings in town (with a less crazy line-up).  Surprisingly, the xiao long bao in Shanghai isn’t as good as we thought, but the pan fried pork buns are so good!!!!  I have cravings for these little things all the time now.  I want to eat it again!!!  Awww….I hope that one day someone can bring these little things to Vancouver so we can eat it all the time.

This place is pretty famous so there was a long line-up even on a weekday.  They have an ordering system where you have to go to the desk to place give your order and pay and then line-up to get the pan fried pork dumplings with your receipt.  There are some tables inside the restaurant for people to sit down and eat; however, don’t expect to easily find a seat because it’s super packed!

We ordered two boxes of pan fried pork buns.  Each box had 4 pieces and cost us 5 Chinese yuan (yes….good price!).  Beware of burning your mouth when you eat it because it’s super HOT!  I think they should put warning labels on the boxes.

There were many chefs inside.  We could see the whole process of how they made the pan fried dumplings.  There were about 5 people making the dumplings and two people were in charge of cooking it.  These pictures are blurry because the glass was dripping with oil and grease, but you can still see the black pan loaded with pork dumplings.  They placed oil into a round black pan and then loaded the dumplings inside (the name says dumplings, but they were more like buns to me).  Then the chef would use his mittens and towels to hold the side of the pan and swirl the pan around in a circular motion so that each pork bun was fried evenly.  I was a bit shocked by the amount of oil that was used, but it was just too good.

And here is the pan fried pork bun!!!  They sprinkled tons of sesame seeds and green onions on top.  Unlike the pan fried pork buns in most Vancouver restaurants which are soft and had a bread-like texture, Yang’s fried dumplings were crispy on the outside.

The bottom of the pork dumplings were brown in colour but not to the point of being burnt.  I loved the sesame seeds that went with the pan fried taste.

4 of these were enough to fill me up.  But I wish I had eaten more….

The inside was similar to a xiao long bao.  The pork juices exploded the moment I bit into it.  The pork was super juicy and flavorful. I am in love with Yang’s fried dumplings.  This was the best food I had during our visit to Shanghai for sure! iPanda gives this 5 paws for awesomeness!!!!
