We were shopping in downtown, Vancouver recently and wanted to try something other than Japadog. iPanda rolled over to Robson Street and entered Aladdins Shawerma Cafe. Here, they offer many different kinds of Shawerma. But we visited later in the day and the only flavor left was the chicken. I was a bit disappointed because I wanted to try the beef one…..
Here is describtion of what a shawerma is:
Shawarma is a wrap with either lamb, goat, chicken, turkey or beef. The meat is placed on a spit which turns and is continually grilled. Shawarma toppings usually consists of tahini (sesame paste), hummus, pickled turnips and amba (pickled conditment).
Here is a picture of them reloading the toppings bar. It’s a giant tub of hummus!!! They also offered cucumbers, green peppers, jalapenos, onions, tomatoes and lettuce.
The chicken is being grilled here. I’ve always been hesitant to try a shawerma because I can see oil dripping onto the grill. It just looks a bit too fatty for me…but this wasn’t the case at all. This whole experience reminded me of a Subway where they stuffed my wrap with loads of fresh veggies.
One of the cooks was nice enough to smile for a picture. Hehe. Say, SHAWERMA!
The wrap was stuffed with all my favourite veggies and then placed on tin foil. This reminds me of a giant clam shell.
Then, it was quickly wrapped….
Tada!!!
And here is my yummy chicken shawerma. I loved the creamy dressing they put into it. The fresh vegetables helped to balance out the meat and the wrap wasn’t as oily as I expected. I found it hard to finish one on my own though and was completely stuffed by the end of it. As well, I found that the shawerma was similar to a Japadog (oroshi) because the last couple of bites are usually soggy. The juices from the chicken and dressing dripped to the end and the bottom of the wrap was pretty mushy because of it. It’s still good though. YUM~
Overall, this was a good experience! I would probably visit again to try the beef (need to go here earlier!!!). But this time, I will be sure to share it with someone.
