Dream Sushi Japanese Restaurant 夢の寿司
Posted by in $$Moderately Priced | 3 Paws | Japanese | VancouveriPanda met up with a bunch of friends for dinner one night! We decided to try Dream Sushi!
Dream Sushi 4401 Main Street (604) 708-1768The moment we sat down I noticed that they had a specials board. But what really caught my eye was the Peking Duck Roll (???). Haha! My friend said that Dream Sushi is famous for its specialty rolls. However, a peking duck roll was definitely too special for me. We decided to order the Ocean Dragon Roll, Spider Roll, Assorted sashimi, Hamachi Sashimi, and toro, masago,& chopped scallop nigiri~ It was a lot of food for three people!
Dream Sushi has pretty comfortable seating. We got a nice table near the sushi bar. However, the bar was completely blocked with people’s posted comments so we could not see the chef at work.
They had some pretty nice Japanese style plates and cups for us to use~ Everything was relatively clean. I’ve noticed that cleanliness in some Vancouver restaurants are going downhill. Clean plates and utensils are the basics of running a restaurant!!! Good job, Dream Sushi!
The first dish to arrive was the Hamachi Sashimi Tataki. I was a bit confused by this dish because Hamachi is supposed to be yellowtail, but the dish that arrived tasted like tuna to me. I think they probably misnamed this dish because it is more like tuna tataki.
Anyways! In terms of the taste, it was actually very sour (due to the sauce). Also, the strips of tuna was really awkward because the strips were cut unevenly and the seared parts were also uneven. Some pieces were thicker than others while others were too thin. Overall, I think it was ok, but definitely not great. This was probably the least liked dish out of the whole meal because there were many pieces left untouched.
And here is the assorted sashimi! Everything was fresh and delicious here. My favourite was the wild salmon. This plate was $12.95 and it was a great value~
We also had a couple pieces of toro, chopped scallop and masago.
Toro sushi is the belly of the tuna and is best when it is fatty. It has a smooth texture and usually melts in your mouth. This was pretty good quality toro.
The chopped scallop was a bit funny looking. Sitting next to the masago, it was very hard to tell the difference. The chopped scallop was bright orange and didn’t look like it had any scallops inside at all. Upon closer inspection, it looked like they mixed the finely chopped scallop with too much masago. I could taste some small pieces of scallop in it, but it was almost impossible to see. This was a bit weird.
And here comes their specialty rolls!! This first one is the spider roll. There were lots of soft shell crab tempura on top. This was then topped with lots of mayo, masago and sesame seeds. The inside had avocado in it. This was delicious! I can understand why this place is most known for it’s specialty rolls.
We also had the ocean dragon roll. This had unagi and a spicy sauce on top. The inside was filled with avocado and oyster tempura. The entire roll was very juicy and flavourful. The spider roll is hard and crunchy whereas the ocean dragon roll is softer and juicier. I personally liked the spider roll more~
We were stuffed by the end of the dinner. Dream Sushi was great and we stayed there to chat for a long time~ Thanks for always promptly refilling our tea pot!!! Go try their specialty rolls! It’s around 9 dollars each but it’s unique and full of surprises.

they can only “dream” of making good sushi.
i ate here in the winter, and everything is disappointing. the gomae was oversauced, the rice was too hard in their rolls and their nabiyaki udon was over cooked.
I think it might depend on what we ordered. The specialty rolls were pretty good and we didn’t experience any problems with the rice being too hard. I might visit again later to see if there is a difference~ Keep us updated!
