Ming Tak Restaurant (別不同餐廳)

Posted by iPanda in $Cheap Eats | 4 Paws | Hong Kong Style Cafe | Vancouver

I’ve visited Ming Tak at their old location on Marine Drive before.  They have very good party trays (love their ham and egg fruit salad).  Since Ming Tak moved to Granville Street, I haven’t had a chance to visit yet.  Ming Tak is a typical Hong Kong style restaurant.  They specialize in baked pasta/rice, noodle bowls and Chinese dishes.

The interior of the walls are covered with menus that show their menu.  I guess posting the menus on the walls will make it easier for guests to see what their specials are.

They have an all day specials menu.  Their combos come with either a cold or hot drink.  There is no extra fee for a cold drink.  However, take out meals do not come with a drink.  Too bad…

After walking into the restaurant, we were seated by a very friendly waitress.  She recommended a bean sprout and Vietnamese ham for a dollar.  Rockia and I both thought we should try it because it’s only 1 dollar.  It was a very simple dish.  The Vietnamese ham were sliced into strips.  Then the bean sprouts were mixed into the dish and topped with sesame oil.  It was pretty good and for one dollar it was worth it.

Rockia was pretty hungry and decided to order from their dinner menu.  Instead of ordering a drink, he went with the daily soup.  This was the green and orange carrot soup.  We really enjoyed this because it was very homemade.  There wasn’t much msg in it.  I think more and more Chinese restaurants understand that customers want to eat more healthy and will opt to use less oil and msg in their dishes now. Good job!
His main dish was the black pepper bitter melon with beef.  You might not be able to tell from the picture but this was a hugh plate of bitter melon.  There are many health benefits to bitter melon.  It can help to lower blood pressure (google bitter melon for a more complete list).

Rockia really liked this dish.  The bitter melon was still very crunchy but it wasn’t super bitter.  Not everyone likes bitter melon because it is quite bitter to people who are not used to it.  It has taken iPanda many years to get used to its taste.
On to iPanda’s meal!  I ordered from the daily specials menu.  Some readers had told me about their giant milk teas so of course I had to try it.  The milk tea glass was ginormous!  It was so tall.  I think it was probably 1 inch taller than typical milk teas.  Yum.
The milk tea was perfectly balanced with the proper portion of tea, evaporated milk and sugar.  Just one word: YUM!
I ordered the spicy pork chop noodle with peanut sauce.  It was super HOT!  Rockia said that it wasn’t hot, but he has always been better at eating spicy foods than I am.  As well, I had the first bowl with all the spicy pepper and seeds floating on top.  So to me…it was HOT!

This noodle bowl was $5..95.  Although the noodles were a bit too spicy, the pork chops were very well made.  The pork chops were very juicy because it was lightly coated in batter and then fried.  Overall, our visit to Ming Tak was a good experience.  The staff here are very friendly.  The dishes are big and are resonably priced.

Hmm….milk tea….
