Sushiyama Japanese Restaurant

Sushiyama is yummi-a~  Hmm.  A co-worker recommended I try this place.  I’ve visited this place many years ago, but the experience was quite different.  This time we had a great time and were even surprised by some of the dishes.  We started off our dinner with the toro sashimi.  This is pictured above and comes with 5 relatively big pieces.  The sashimi had a rich creamy texture.  It was very fresh because it was flavourful but was not super fishy.

This next dish is the reason why we paid a visit to Sushiyama.  Are you ready?  You better sit tightly in your chair.  This is SUSHI PIZZA!!! WOW!  The bottom was a deep fried rice dough.  On the top, there is mayo, crab meat, avocado, tuna, salmon, masago, and bbq sauce.  The sushi pizza looked so good!

The taste was incredible.  The bottom layer is fried rice dough so it was hard and crunchy.  Then the rest of the ingredients were creamy and soft.  The sweetness of the salmon and tuna mixed with the freshness of the other ingredients. Yum…

The only two problems with this dish is that the rice is hard and parts of it are a bit harder to chew.  Also, the toppings tend to fall off when you try to eat it together.  You will either have to use your hands or do what I did.  I simply stuck my chopstick into the middle of a slice to keep it together and ate it that way~  :P

The next dish to arrive was the East of Eden.  This roll was a bit sweet at the first bite.  It was a very creative mix of Asian ingredients.  However, I wasn’t used to having Chinese mushrooms on sushi rolls and some of the other ingredients didn’t mix particularly well.  The taste wasn’t very impressive but it is definitely a colourful and inventive dish.

The next roll is the caterpillar roll.  I’ve seen this on the menu of many restaurants so I really wanted to try it this time.  The outside of the roll was covered with avocado.  The inside was BBQ eel and crab meat.  This roll was good but it wasn’t unique.  As you can see in the picture, it was a very long roll.

I love avocado and this roll had plenty of it.

We also wanted some shrimp tempura.  Once again…it was similar to all other places.  They were very well breaded and fried.  As well, the shrimp was very fresh and sweet.  But we decided that next time we go to a Japanese restaurant we will probably not order shrimp tempura because it is almost the same at most places. :)

Overall impression:

Good:
  • The sushi pizza is definitely worth the visit
  • Prices are reasonable
  • good fresh quality fish
Bad:
  • Servers were running around and were hard to flag down
