Huang’s Beef Noodle Shop at Victoria Drive (維多利亞街 老黃牛肉麵)

Oh my. Every time we pass by this place it appears to be packed with people inside. So we were really excited to try it. We ordered one large Taiwanese beef noodle and one fried chicken noodle. You can upgrade from small to large by adding a dollar. That seemed like a pretty good deal.
The inside of this place is really small so you will have to wait in line during peak hours. There is no decor at all and the walls remind me of the inside of a dirty kitchen. Another thing is that we actually waited a long time for our orders. Rockia’s beefy noodle came first and I had to wait awhile for mine. I guess it was because they had to fry the chicken.
The moment the beef noodle was placed in front of us I noticed all the oil that was floating in the soup. Rockia said he didn’t notice at first but after finishing 1/4 of his bowl he said that the oil was too much for him. I tried to finish the beef noodles but it just left a bad after taste in my mouth. The soup was probably made with fatty beef and that is the reason why it was so oily. However, I wish they had skimmed out the fatty layer from the soup base before making the noodle bowls. Apart from the soup base, the noodles had great texture to it. It wasn’t overcooked and soft. The beef was sliced into thin layers. I didn’t like it in thin layers because I prefer to have something more to chew on. Bigger layers or even chunks would be better for me.
I had the fried chicken noodle. The chicken was fried really well. I enjoyed the batter the most because it was extra crunchy. However, this was not a healthy choice either because it is fried. The soup base in this dish is less oily than the beef noodle.
Overall, this is not the place for us. I know that many people do not mind the oiliness but we definitely aren’t used to it. We both had to drink lots of tea in order to wash it down. :)
